Video: Active shooter training course being held inside Guthrie school

Law enforcement officers and fire departments throughout Oklahoma and Arkansas are going through a week-long training course in Guthrie to improve integration between law enforcement, fire, dispatchers and emergency medical services (EMS) for an active attack or shooter scenarios.

The Active Attack Integrated Response Train-the-Trainer Course (AAIR) is a 40 hour performance that started on Monday. With school out of session due to Spring Break, the course is being held inside the Guthrie Junior High.

The course provides law enforcement officers with key medical skills based on tactical emergency casualty care guidelines, which can be used to increase survivability of victims.

“I think it is sad that we live in a world that requires this type of training, but I am very thankful that our first responders are getting the best training available,” resident Phil Nichols said.

The course is being overlooked by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training program from Texas State University.

“The Sheriff’s Office is excited to bring this ‘Train the Trainer’ course to Logan County,” Sheriff Damon Devereaux said.

The sheriff says this training will help all the local agencies.

“This will ultimately allow the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Guthrie Police Department and the Guthrie Fire Department to train our agencies locally.”

Monday morning officials went through a series of possible scenarios in the school building, including surrounding and protecting the perimeter while allowing medics to render aid to would be victims.

The training is expected to continue until Friday.

Earlier this year church leaders, members and pastors took part in a two-hour active threat response course to help recognize early warning signs and how to respond against an active shooter situation in their congregation.
