Western Heights entered Thursday evening’s game with the Guthrie Bluejays as confident as they have ever been in several seasons, but Guthrie flexed their muscles early to take away any ideas of back-to-back wins for the Jets.
Guthrie senior defensive back Ja’lyn Morgan snapped Western Heights first pass attempt out of the air for a 10-yard pick six. The defensive play came less than a minute into the game and the Jays were off and rolling en route to a 51-7 victory.
The Bluejays have now won three straight district games to improve to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in district 5A-2. Western Heights is now 4-3 and holds a 2-2 district record.
In total, six different Guthrie players scored, including freshmen Jackson Waddell’s with his first varsity touchdown.
On offense, Chance Whitt stole the show with four catches for 122 yards and two touchdown scores.
The Jays piled up 235 yards running the ball with seven different ball carriers. Senior Jaron Pryor finished with a team high 65 yards on just eight touches.
Special teams got into the scoring column with a career long 47-yard field goal off the right leg of Brady Benjamin just before halftime to give the Jays a 30-0 lead.
For the Guthrie defense, they accomplished what they set out to do and that was to stop Jets quarterback Kevin Rassatt.
Rassatt finished with 142 rushing yards, but most of those coming when the game was already decided. The Jays kept the senior in limbo throughout the night and held him to 5-of-12 passing for only 43 yards and two interceptions.
A week ago, Rassatt gained state attention after he led the Jets to a 26-23 upset win over Deer Creek. He entered Thursday’s game with 25 touchdowns and 2,252 total yards.
