Basketball sweeps Piedmont in front of Homecoming crowd

The Guthrie basketball programs were back in conference play Friday evening as they hosted Piedmont in front of a packed Guthrie High School gymnasium crowd.

The sixth-ranked Lady Jays were never threaten after they jumped out to a 22-8 first quarter lead. Guthrie picked up their seventh win in the 60-43 homecoming win.

Freshmen Brandi Jordan erupted for seven first quarter points to finish with a team high 16 points. In the second half, it was senior Micayla Haynes, who was later crowned as the Homecoming Queen, allowing the Lady Jays to maintain with a double-digit lead by scoring 12 of her 16 points.

Freshmen Nakiya Stevenson and junior Aaliyah Allison each added 12 points.

In the second half, Guthrie connected on 16 of their 18 free throws.

The Lady Jays are now 7-4 overall and 4-0 in the Suburban Conference. Piedmont is now 3-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Bluejays hold off two rallies by Wildcats

Junior guard David Sumo, who was named to the All-Tournament team in the McGuinness Classic last week, scored 15 of his team high 21 points in the first half en route to a 58-55 win.

After a 21-all game in the first half, the Jays built up a 42-30 lead at the 2:05 in the third quarter, but Piedmont’s Adokiye Iyaye led a Wildcat charge.

With a 42-32 lead to start the final period, Iyaye scored 18 of his game high 34 points. Luckily for the Jays it was not enough.

Senior JD Honeycutt scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half and junior TC Ellis finished with 10 points.

Guthrie continues to rise in the 5A rankings. After starting the season at No. 20, the Jays have moved up to the No. 11 ranking with a 7-4 overall record and 3-1 conference mark. Piedmont drops their third straight game and is now 3-9 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
