Biggs comes up big time with catch at Guthrie Lake

Guthrie has seen its fair share of huge catfish in the past year when the noodling pros came to town, but a local made his mark recently in a more conventional manner.

Scott BiggsGuthrie resident Scott Biggs snagged a flathead catfish last Friday evening (June 21) as the sun set over Guthrie Lake. The catfish bottomed out on Biggs’ 50 pound scales.

The whisker fish was caught with a rod and reel with a 20 pound test line. The bait of choice was a worm.

Biggs, who was fishing with his wife and sons, said it took several minutes to bring the big mouth to shore, but says the fish did not put up a big fight until getting closer to shore.

At first, because the lack of a fight, Biggs thought he was hung up in brush before moving on to thinking it was a turtle.

It is uncertain what the record for the biggest catch at Guthrie Lake is, but Biggs is certain his catch ranks among the big ones.

In the series ‘Mudcats’, that was filmed in town last July, saw a hand full of 50-pound plus fish weighed in from across the state. The biggest hand-caught fish belonged to Marion Kincaid and Mark Shull a 62.65 flathead catfish.
