The top-ranked Guthrie BlueJays will be riding some impressive streaks as they travel to Oklahoma City Friday night for a district match-up with Western Heights.
The Jays and Jets will begin week two of the district season with a kick-off set for 7:30. The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM and Guthrie Sports Page with the Kick Off Show set for 7 p.m. Chris Evans and Casey Porter will have the call.
Western Heights (0-4) will be looking for their first win of the season while the BlueJays have been untouched in the loss column and enter with a 4-0 record. In fact, the Jays are riding a couple of streaks that are becoming impressive.
The Jays are currently riding an 18-game winning streak dating back to last season’s 14-0 state championship campaign. Equally as impressive, Guthrie has won their past 17 district games dating back to the 2009 season.
During the 17-game district streak, the Jays have not only won, but have been dominant in those games by outscoring their district foes 764-97. Of those 17 straight district wins, the Guthrie defense has shut-out nine of their counter parts en route to back-to-back district championships.
The overall 18-game winning streak is the second longest in school history. The Jays won a school record 20 games in a row in the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
Perhaps not as impressive, but is a streak: Guthrie has won their last nine games in the month of September that dates back to the 2010 season.
None of those streaks will aid the Jays this evening with Western Heights, or the rest of the season, but the focus for the Jays will be not to look ahead next week to the home showdown with Carl Albert.
Rafe Watkins teams are 5-0 against the Jets and are heavy favorites in the 2012 meeting.
Western Heights have won just five of their last 34 games as second-year head coach Edward Polly looks to build the program, who made the playoffs in 2007 and finished with an 8-3 record. That season has the only winning season for the Jets in 20 years.
The Jets may have to hang their helmet on freshmen MarKeith Adams at the skill position. Adams can line-up just about anywhere on the offense. Along with Adams, three other Jets have taken snaps at the quarterback position already this year.
Senior running back Xavier McLaurin will help the offense that has struggled to score points in their first four games and will face a Guthrie defense that shut them out a season ago (48-0).
