Guthrie will look to carry the momentum from last week’s win over Midwest City into a road district matchup Friday against Lawton.
The Bluejays and Wolverines meet Oct. 9, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
Guthrie enters the contest at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in Class 5A District 1 after defeating Midwest City 49-20 at Jelsma Stadium. The victory brought the Bluejays back to .500 and provided a strong response to their one-point loss at Carl Albert the previous week.
Friday offers an opportunity for Guthrie to earn consecutive district victories and strengthen its position as the race for playoff spots develops.
Lawton comes into the matchup at 3-2 overall and 1-0 in district play. The Wolverines were idle last week after opening their district schedule with a 42-20 road victory over Midwest City on Sept. 25.
Lawton’s other victories came against Eisenhower, 52-0, and MacArthur, 26-20. Its losses were against University City and Stillwater.
Both teams have defeated Midwest City, but Friday’s head-to-head meeting will provide a more meaningful measure of where they stand in the district.
Guthrie has won three of its past four games after opening the season with losses to Tuttle and Elgin. That stretch includes victories over Bethany, Blanchard and Midwest City, along with the narrow 17-16 setback against Carl Albert.
For head coach Kelly Beeby’s Bluejays, Friday’s challenge is sustaining that progress away from home against a rested opponent.
A Guthrie victory would move the Bluejays above .500 for the first time this season and improve their district record to 2-1.
Fans unable to make the trip can follow the action through Guthrie News Page’s live football coverage.
