Bluejays open district play with major test at Carl Albert

Guthrie begins its Class 5A District 1 schedule Friday night with one of the biggest challenges in Oklahoma high school football.

The Bluejays travel to Midwest City to face undefeated and top-ranked Carl Albert at 7 p.m. The Titans enter the district opener with a 4-0 record and a 57-game winning streak.

Guthrie enters district play with momentum after rebounding from an 0-2 start. The Bluejays have won two straight games, shutting out Bethany 28-0 before defeating Blanchard 49-7 last Friday.

The Guthrie defense has allowed only seven points during the winning streak. Against Blanchard, Dereon Whitehorn helped break the game open by returning an interception for a touchdown.

The Bluejays will need another strong defensive performance against a Carl Albert program that continues to find ways to win.

The Titans opened the season with victories over Newcastle and Booker T. Washington before defeating Bishop McGuinness 20-8. Carl Albert survived its closest test of the season last week, holding off Del City 31-28.

That victory extended Carl Albert’s winning streak to 57 games. A victory over Guthrie would allow the Titans to tie Bixby’s Oklahoma 11-man record of 58 consecutive wins.

For Guthrie, Friday presents an opportunity to end that streak while gaining an early advantage in the district race.

Senior quarterback Daelon Rice leads a Guthrie offense that has scored 77 points in the last two games. The Bluejays will need to protect the football, remain patient offensively, and consistently win the battle at the line of scrimmage.

Senior offensive lineman Sir William Morgan will be an important part of that effort against a physical Carl Albert defensive front. Defensively, players including Skylor Scamman and Gabe Jackson will be counted on to limit explosive plays and keep the Bluejays within striking distance.

Carl Albert has been a significant hurdle for Guthrie in recent seasons. The Titans defeated the Bluejays in the 2024 Class 5A state championship game and have controlled the series for more than a decade.

Friday’s game gives Guthrie another opportunity to change that narrative.

While the district championship will not officially be decided in the opening week, the winner will immediately take control of the race. Both teams still face a district schedule that includes Duncan, Durant, Lawton, Midwest City and Noble.

For Guthrie, the formula is straightforward: avoid turnovers, prevent Carl Albert from creating short fields, and remain within reach entering the fourth quarter.

The Bluejays have rebuilt their confidence over the last two weeks. Friday night will show how far they have come—and whether they are ready to challenge the team that has set the standard in Class 5A.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Carl Albert High School in Midwest City.
