Bluejays win back-to-back tournaments in Chandler

For the second straight year, the Guthrie High School baseball team went a perfect 4-0 to capture the Mark Howard Memorial Tournament.

The Jays picked up wins over Class 4A Bethel, defending Class 2A state champion Christian Heritage Academy, Class 6A Putnam City West and Class 3A’s fifth ranked Chandler.

In the win over Chandler on Saturday, the Jays  took an early lead in the first inning. Tyler Kisner singled on the first pitch of the at bat and scoring Jackson Wadddell. View the game by clicking here.

After Guthrie scored one run in the top of the fifth, Chandler answered with one of their own. Guthrie  scored when Zac Poplin doubled to plate Mitchell Taft.

The Jays  took the lead for good with four runs in the third inning despite not producing a single hit.

Freshmen pitcher Nolan Gagnon (1-0) earned the win in his first varsity start. The southpaw tossed four innings, allowing four runs, two hits and striking out four.

Evan Kowalski and Kisner each collected multiple hits. Poplin added to his day with two RBI’s and three quality innings on the mound to close out the Lions.
