Boys Cross Country team claims Shawnee meet title

The Guthrie High School cross country programs are preparing for their third meet this weekend. This past weekend, the boys varsity took first place.

The Bluejays finished with 27 team points to claim the win over the host Shawnee Wolves by 25 points.

Senior Mason Barney came across the line first in the meet in a time of 18:38. The individual win is Barney’s first for the varsity.

Junior Grant Mayer was 19 seconds behind Barney to finish second overall. Fellow junior Jaxon Harden rounded out the top five with a run of 19:25.

In just his second varsity meet, Mason Mayer, younger brother of Grant, finished seventh with a time of 20:17.

Brothers Lance and Dawson Sallee came across the line next for the Jays for 12th and 13 place, respecitvely.

In their first race on the season in Blanchard, the boys team finished second to Oklahoma Christian Schools in the three mile run.

Barney finished seventh (17:18) and Grant Mayer 10th (17:41) for the top 10.

Harden ran an 18:13 and was followed by Dawson Sallee (18:21), Lance Sallee (18:26) and Mason Mayer (19:09).

Lady Jays

In the Blanchard meet, the Lady Jays took sixth overall and second in Shawnee.

Junior Kaitlyn Leaty finished 23rd in the two mile Blanchard run as the first Guthrie runner across the line. Following her was freshmen Hannah Smith, freshmen Kamryn Boller, junior Madelyn Bishop and junior Sage Duehning.

In Shawnee, junior Sara Smith ran a 25:44 to finish eighth overall. Five seconds later it was Leaty finishing ninth and four seconds after that it was Smith finishing tenth.

Closely behind was Maddie Bishop (25:54) in 11th place and Boller in 12th (25:27).

Both teams will be back on the course for the Kingfisher Invitational on Saturday.
