While an exciting weekend of women’s college basketball was taking place in Dallas with Mississippi State upsetting Uconn in the women’s Final 4, Guthrie Oklahoma’s own Braydin Russell was just down the road at Carol High School playing in the Middle School All-American game.
She was one of 28 total sixth graders selected from across the nation to play in the game.
To be selected for the game, multiple scouts from across the U.S. had to have seen a given player play in either a national tournament and/or elite camp and agreed the player was deserving.
Russell, who is currently ranked No. 13 nationally, played less than 14 minutes but led both teams in scoring with 13 points on the game, including 2-3 from the three-point line.
When asked about her time in Dallas she stated, “It was an awesome experience and really fun!” “It’s kind of crazy to be from a small town in Oklahoma and be able to compete with the best out there.”
With cities like Chicago, New York City, and L.A. represented you can see why she feels that way.
Two other girls were selected from Oklahoma, Boston Berry, ranked No. 11 nationally from Jones and Aaliyah Henderson ranked No. 1 nationally from Norman. All three play on the Ok Lady Thunder.
The sixth grade team is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation.
“It’s cool that all of us were chosen knowing that other states only had one player selected,” Russell said.
“We all can’t wait to experience it again next year!”
Braydin, the daughter of Doug and Jennifer Russell, is currently a student at St. Mary’s in Guthrie.
