Brothers named Defensive Player of the Year; Chappell honored too

The honors just keep on rolling in for Kentrell Brothers. The latest? The Oklahoman’s Big All City Defensive Player of the Year.

Brothers defensive junior teammate Landry Chappell was named to the All City Defensive team. Both were also selected to the Oklahoman Big All City roster.

Left tackle Blake Belcher was named to the second team offense and sophomore Bryan Dutton and senior wide receiver Devonte McCully were named to the honorable mention list.

Guthrie finished the season with an 11-2 record by advancing to the state semi-finals for the second consecutive year.

Brothers had 63 catches for school-record 1,304 yards and 18 TDs to help BlueJays reach 5A semifinals for second straight year. On defense, had 100 tackles. Finished career with 160 catches, 3,029 receiving yards, 40 TDs, 285 tackles and 51 sacks. He is one of five canidates in the running for the All State Player of the Year. For the second straight season, Chappell led 5A in tackles with 178 this season and 170 in 2008. Chappell has piled up 423 tackles and 15 sacks in his three-year career.

Belcher, who many are tabbing as perhaps the top lineman in the state next season, commanded the left side of the line of scrimmage. Click here for the All City Offensive Team.

McCully was the second leading receiver behind Brothers and earned the recognition of being named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All State team. McCully hauled in 38 catches and 10 for touchdowns to go with 720 yards.

Dutton became Guthrie’s all-time passing leader in school history in Week 8 and finished the year with 2,408 passing yards (another school record) to go along with another school record of 54 career passing touchdowns with 29 this season.
