Brothers, McCully invited to Oil Bowl Classic

It has been a busy week for seniors Kentrell Brothers and Devonte McCully.

Both were named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association All State team and 5A West All Star team. Brothers was also named to the All-Vype team. Now comes the latest honor. Side note: there is more to come as far as honors for the BlueJay playmakers.

The duo has been invited to play for Oklahoma in the 74th Annual Oil Bowl Classic. The Okie’s takes on Texas on June 11, 2011 in Wichita Falls, Texas. The annual game dates back to 1938.

The primary purpose of the game is to raise money for charities in Texas and Oklahoma. Over the years, thousands of dollars have been raised and divided equally between the two states. Texas’ share goes the North Texas Rehabilitation Center of Wichita Falls. Oklahoma’s share goes to the Oklahoma Coaches Association charities.

McCully, the 6’6 wide out, brought in 38 catches and 10 of those were for touchdowns to go with 720 yards for the BlueJays. Brothers, a Missouri commit, finished his senior campaign with 63 catches, 1,304 yards, and 18 scores. All three are school records – breaking his own record in 2009. Brothers is the only BlueJay receiver to collect over a 1,000 yards in a season. In his three years, Brothers collected 156 catches, 2,984 yards, and 38 touchdown grabs. On defense he finished with 100 tackles and 19 sacks despite offense’s working their game plan around him. Brothers finishes his high school career with 286 career tackles and a school record of 51 sacks.

If they accept, they will be the 14th and 15th player in GHS history to play in the game, including 15 since 2002. Rafe Watkins and Kelly Beeby served as coaches in 2009.
