The tone was set early that the top seeded Guthrie BlueJays was not going to slip on day one of the Class 5A Region IV tournament with a 16-0 run-rule win over Tulsa East Central inside beautiful Squires Field.

The Jays pushed across 9 runs in the first inning and added five more in the second inning to secure their 24th win of the season. The run-rule win is the 16th this season for the team in blue and white.

Guthrie advances to take on the No. 2 seed Bishop McGuinness after the Irish took down the three seeded Skiatook Bulldogs, 6-4, in the second game of the day. In the final game, Skiatook eliminated East Central 8-5 and will play the Guthrie-McGuinness loser at 5:30 in the double elimination tournament on Thursday.

Guthrie (24-10) sent 15 players to the plate and leading the way was Landry Chappell, who finished with a 3-for-3 day with three RBIs. Chappell was a home run shy from hitting the cycle.

Speaking of home runs, John Clark drilled his eighth on the season for a solo shot, Bryan Dutton connected on his seventh homer of the season while the Jays lone senior, Hunter Gates, connected for his first varsity home run. Both Dutton and Gates were a perfect 2-for-2 on the day with Dutton finishing with three RBIs and Gates with two.

Gates also collected the win on the mound to improve to 4-2. Gates pitched hitless ball for three innings while striking out five and walking none. Blaze Hastings came in for relief and pitched the final two innings allowing  just two hits. The freshmen made his third appearance this season.

The sixth ranked Jays and ninth ranked Irish (19-16) will meet for the second time this season. The two teams met back on April 1st in the Choctaw Tournament. The Irish, who have won three of their last four, handed the Jays an 8-2 set back. Read game story.
