City officials offer advice for severe weather season; register your storm shelter with GFD

Storm season is approaching, but you and your family can start preparing now. The City of Guthrie is offering a few tips to help keep your family safe.

If severe storms are in the forecast, stay tuned to local news media or radio for updates, watches and warnings. If a storm warning is issued, take shelter indoors, away from windows, and avoid using electrical equipment and plumbing for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last sound of thunder.

If conditions are favorable for tornados, be prepared to take cover on the lowest floor and in an interior room, safe room, or underground shelter or basement. Make sure your emergency kit includes a battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio and spare batteries.

Residents in the Guthrie Fire Department district are also urged to register their storm shelter or safe room with the fire department. Registering your shelter is free and can help emergency personnel conduct rescue and recovery operations more effectively should the need arise. Click here for registration forms or stop in at the Guthrie Fire Station located at 209 E. Springer.
