Class 5A football playoff bracket; Jays on the road

The Guthrie Bluejays will be on the road for the Class 5A football playoffs. The Jays will begin the road trip with a trip to Altus for the first round.

For the second straight season, the Jays will open the playoffs with the Altus Bulldogs, except for this time in western Oklahoma. Guthrie finished with a 47-17 win in last year’s first round game inside Jelsma Stadium.

The Jays finished 6-3 this season and third in district play behind McGuinness and Deer Creek and just ahead of Carl Albert.

The Bulldogs enter with a 9-1 record with their lone loss coming to the defending state champions (Lawton MacArthur) in week five. Altus has won five straight.

Jacob Unruh, a lead prep writer for The Oklahoman says, “(Taven) Birdow’s return this season from IMG Academy is making a huge difference for the Bulldogs. He’s rushed for 1,827 yards and 19 touchdowns while setting two school records this season. Now, he has a chance to shine in the big stage.”

The Guthrie-Altus winner will play the winner between Coweta and Tulsa Memorial in round two.
