Court papers: Former school employee admits to having sex with student

A former Guthrie school employee was formally arraigned in a Logan County courtroom on Tuesday afternoon. Court papers show the suspect admitted to investigators that he had sex with a 15-year-old student.

The judge agreed with the state’s recommendation of a $50,000 bond for Byron “BJ” McDonald, who was charged with second-degree rape and is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old female.

McDonald was arraigned via video and responded to all the judge’s question with “yes ma’am.”

The former employee served as an assistant boys basketball coach and worked as a paraprofessional in the in‐school suspension program at Guthrie High School. He was terminated after the school received the details of the allegations. Related story: GHS staff member arrested for second degree rape

The charge carries up to no less than a year behind bars and up to 15 years if found guilty. The term would require an 85 percent serve time.

In the probable cause affidavit, McDonald understood and signed a Miranda Advice of Rights form and told investigators that he had been talking to the female on social media for a long time and was aware that she was a 15-years-old high school student.

Both McDonald and the juvenile said their conversations often turned sexually and that McDonald went to her home on at least three occasions. On the third trip to the home this past summer, both said sexual acts were performed.

McDonald is set to be back in court on Oct. 22 at 9 a.m.
