Dane Jenkins pins his way to Carl Albert title; Jays set for regionals

The Guthrie High School Wrestling squad traveled to Carl Albert on Friday to compete in the Malcolm Wade Invitational.  The tournament was the final regular season event for the Jays as they prep for Regionals and State.

In what was a heavy 5A field, the Jays performed well bringing home one championship award by way of Dane Jenkins. The Jays also brought home four second place awards, two third place awards and several fifth place awards.

Jenkins worked his way through the 220 pound bracket recording five falls in five matches, four of those coming in the first period. His championship match lasted into the third period before he earned his fifth and final fall.

This 5A heavy tournament brings together most of the teams we will compete against at Regionals and is a good indicator of how we stack up,” Jays head coach Justin Stevens said. “I am pleased with our results, but as a coaching staff we will take the things we need to improve upon and work hard in those areas over the next two weeks before the Regional Tournament.”

The Jays will head to Del City on Feb. 17 and 18.  All individual placers earning fourth place or better earn a birth in the state Tournament held Feb. 24-25 at the State Fairgrounds Arena.
