Doubles teams take third for Jays, Lady Jays

The Guthrie tennis program once again hosted boys and girls tournaments this past week at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The BlueJays were once again paced by their doubles teams with a third and fourth place finish.

The No. 1 doubles team of Barrett Porter and Josh Wehrenberg placed third overall by  defeating Kingfisher in the first round 6-2, 6-1. In the second round, they beat Harrah in three sets before losing to the overall No. 1 seed Henryetta 6-2, 6-0. In their match, they took down Tahlequah 6-3, 6-4.

Andy Hartley and Seth Vicchio placed fourth overall in No. 2 doubles when they defeated Western Heights 6-0, 6-2. In the second round they defeated Tahlequah 7-6, 6-2.  In the semi-finals they lost to the one seed OCS 6-1, 6-4 and dropped their last match to Harrah 6-3, 7-5.

 Dalton Jones won his first match in No. 2 singles againstMidwest City 6-1, 6-0 and then lost to Henryetta 6-0, 6-0.  In his next match, he beat El Reno 6-3, 7-5, and lost his third place match 6-4, 6-3 to Kingfisher. 

Dylan Walker, who played in the highly competitive No. 1 singles field, placed 10th overall. He lost his first match to his opponent from Harrah 6-1, 6-2, but won his next match against Kingfisher in three sets. In his final match he lost to Henryetta.

For the Lady Jays tournament, they too were led by a doubles team.

Sarah Howells and Carrisa Mathena, who were playing in No. 2 doubles, placed third.

After receiving a bye in the first round they defeated a team from Western Heights 6-1, 6-3. In the next round, they lost to Tahlequah 6-0, 6-2 and in their third place match they defeated Harrah 6-3, 6-1.

In the No. 1 doubles competition, Brooke Powell and Taylar Swartzbaugh placed sixth by winning two of four matches. They beat Henryetta in their first round 7-5, 6-2 and in the next round they lost to Harrah 6-4, 6-3. In their next round they beat Western Heights 6-3, 6-1 and in the fifth place match they lost to Tahlequah 6-1, 6-1.

In singles action, Cheyenne Royal placed eighth and Heidi Kuruvilla took sixth.

In her first round, Royal defeated Kingfisher 6-2, 6-1. In the second round, the freshmen played El Reno and lost 7-5, 7-6. Royal’s El Reno opponent went on to place second.

“I was very proud of Cheyenne, she had a great match,” head coach Mary Hudson said.

In her next round, Royal lost to Harrah in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 and in her final match she lost to Midwest City 6-4, 6-3.

Kuruvilla defeated her opponent from Kingfisher in the first round 6-0, 6-0 and in the second round lost to OCS in three sets 2-6, 7-5, 8-10. In her next round she defeated Harrah in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 and in her last match for third place she lost to Henryetta 7-5, 7-5.

Hudson was sure to add that, “Heidi has improved so much and is doing really well.”

Hudson also thanked both Eskridge Chevrolet and Companion Health for their sponsorship of the tournaments.

This upcoming weekend the girls will travel to Duncan for a 16 team tournament, on Friday, while the boys will make the trip on Saturday.
