Department of Public Safety officials report 59 traffic-related fatalities in January 2015 compared to 48 in the same month last year.
Three pedestrians and five motorcyclists died in crashes during the month of January. The highest daily fatality numbers include 12 deaths on Thursdays dropping to 11 on Saturdays. There were seven days in the month of January with no reported fatalities.
Four of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related. Fifty-six of the fatality victims were Oklahoma residents and three nonresidents. There were 43 male and 16 female victims. Seven of the fatality victims were in the age group 20 and under. The 21 – to 30-year-old age group led the fatality count with 25.
Grady, Oklahoma and Tulsa County led the state with a total of six fatalities, followed by Bryan, Stephens and Texas County with three fatalities each. The highest number of fatalities occurred on US highways with 21. There were 13 fatalities on state highways.
Forty percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.
