Driver crashes off I-35, lands on Highway 33 below bridge

A suspected intoxicated driver crashed off Interstate 35 and onto State Highway 33 early Saturday morning.

Guthrie police and fire responded to the single-vehicle crash at approximately 12:24 a.m. beneath the I-35 bridge at SH-33. When responders arrived, they found a gray Honda Civic resting in the westbound lanes.

According to initial reports, a 21-year-old driver was traveling northbound on I-35 when he left the roadway, went through a barricade, became airborne between the two bridges, and fell onto Highway 33 below. The vehicle landed in the eastbound lanes before bouncing into the westbound lanes.

The driver’s family was alerted to the crash through a detection app and arrived on the scene. He was transported to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City with multiple injuries.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. As of Saturday morning, no official report has been released.

Westbound traffic on Highway 33 was shut down for approximately 30 minutes following the crash.
