A suspicious person slumped over a steering wheel on a county road led investigators to several stolen items, including a truck, firearms and personal property. For the suspect, it’s not the first time to find himself in trouble.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to County Road 71 and Hiawassee Road for a person leaning over the wheel of a red Dodge pickup truck at a standstill near the intersection on Jan. 19. While responding, deputies learned the truck was reported stolen.
The suspect, Israiel Cummings, 28, was awakened and taken into custody.
During the inventory inside the Dodge Dakota, deputies found a knife, a loaded rifle, a reported stolen AR 15, two spotlights, a hatchet, shell to a possible air gun, a chain with a lock and inside a backpack combat boots, a ring with three clear stones, a blue bank bag containing personal items of several victims were found. In the bed of the truck, deputies located several tools and an air compressor.
According to court documents, the Coyle man admitted to deputies that he had not slept in four days and had used “meth” the day before. Deputies detected alcohol and said Cummings’ speech was slurred.
The owner of the Dodge truck was notified their truck was found. Another victim, whose paper work was found in the bag, was contacted and was able to identify the stolen ring.
While entering the stolen items into evidence, a deputy noticed the rifle matched the description of the reported stolen rifle and the reporting party was notified about the possibility of recovering the item.
Cummings was charged with four counts, including concealing stolen property, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, control of a motor vehicle while under the influence and possession of burglar implements.
He was given a $100,000 bail and is scheduled to be back in court on Feb. 25.
In December 2015, Cummings was arrested for similar charges after being pulled over and was in possession of several firearms, items associated with burglary, including saws and bolt and fence cutters, and a reported stolen John Deere Gator.
Court papers show Cummings admitted to investigators that he knew the Gator was stolen and was taking it to a residence. He also said the weapons were taken from a property and were possibly stolen.
He was given a $10,000 bond and the case is now set for a preliminary hearing.
Cummings pleaded guilty in Aug. 2013 to conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled drug without a prescription. A fourth charge of possession of burglar implements was dropped. He served 90 days in the county jail and placed on probation.
