The best of the west in Class 5A wrestling gathered for the 46th Carl Albert Invitational. One of the best included the Guthrie BlueJays.
Eight of the top 10 teams in Class 5A, according to the coaches tournament rankings, attended the two-day event. Top ranked Altus won titles at 119, 145, and 160 pounds to win the team championship. Fifth ranked Duncan was runner-up followed by fourth ranked Deer Creek, sixth ranked Guthrie and third ranked Carl Albert.
Guthrie sophomore Bryan Dutton won his third tournament of the season, at 140, with a 3-1 win over Carl Albert’s Blake Lam. Dutton, participating in his fourth tournament this season, got a late first period take down to control the match.
Dutton was one of seven Jays to place.
Junior Landry Chappell squared off with a familiar opponent in Deer Creek’s Alex Christensen in the finals of the 215 match. The match, featuring the two favorites to win state in 5A, was the third meeting in seven days and fifth in the last two seasons. Just two days ago inside the GHS gym, Chappell controlled the match from the beginning in capturing the 10-1 major decision to get back with Christensen, who defeated him in the finals of the Cushing Tournament the previous Saturday.
The dual was scoreless going into the third period before Christensen got an escape early in the period and went on to get the 3-0 decision for the tournament championship.
Senior Dennis Murphy (152) had a great showing in the tournament, including a 4-1 win in his final match, and finished with a third place finish.
Michael Conner (171) and John Davison (285) both dropped their final match in the consolation finals to finish fourth overall.
