Guthrie collects 20th win of the season

The Guthrie baseball team needed every at bat, Thursday afternoon, against Bishop McGuinness on the second day of the Deer Creek East-West Classic.

Jaden Chappell not only had a walk off base hit but added his 6th home run of the season against McGuinness.

And in the last at bat it was senior Jaden Chappell’s walk off base hit to right to conclude a seventh inning rally and a 7-6 win over the Irish.

The win gives Guthrie 20 wins this season and joins the top two ranked teams (Deer Creek and Carl Albert) in Class 5A with at least 20 wins. Collinsville is expected to be the fourth team today as well.

McGuinness had taken both games earlier this season with 6-5 and 18-2 wins in early March and April, respectively.

With McGuinness trailing 5-1 in their last at bat, the Irish put together five runs in the top of the seventh to take their first lead of the day at 6-5.

John Clark started the final inning as a pinch hitter and was hit by a pitch. Dustin Bowman then hit into a fielder’s choice for the first out and Bryan Dutton followed that with a fly out to right center.

Down to their final out, Guthrie’s John Cotton reached by an error to score Clark and tie the game at 6-all.

Senior Jaden Chappell, who homered with a blast to center field in the fourth inning to give his team a then 4-1 lead, gave the Jays the win when he took the pitch the other way to score the game winning run in Cotton. Chappell, the Cowley County Tiger to be next season, collected three hits on the afternoon and now has six homers on the season.

Cotton picked up the win on the mound. Cotton was coming off an impressive pitching outing in his last game against top ranked Deer Creek last week.

Dutton gave the Jays their first lead with a RBI double in the second and later added another RBI in the third.

Guthrie now stands at 2-0 in the Classic with yesterday’s win over Newcastle. Next up for the Jays will be the Durant Lions at noon Friday. Guthrie defeated Durant, 6-5, back on March 18th in the Southeast Shootout Tournament.

Head Coach Jon Chappell’s squad is now 4-3 against 6A schools, 9-1 in 5A games, 6-3 in 4A games, 1-1 in Class 3A, and 0-1 in independent games.
