Despite only being together for less than 48 hours as a team, the Guthrie boys basketball team played well in their season opener in El Reno on Tuesday evening. In fact, they led almost the entire evening, but not in the end.

El Reno captured their first lead at the 3:40 mark of the third quarter, but the BlueJays gained the lead right back until 38 seconds left in the game. A lead El Reno would not surrender again as the Indians got the edge, 60-57.

While Guthrie was playing in their first game due to the extended football season, that saw the football program earn the state championship, El Reno had five games under their belts, including a tournament. Both teams went deep to their bench by playing a total of 10 players each.

The BlueJays (0-1) started the game on a 14-10 run in the first quarter before the Indians outscored the ninth-ranked Jays in the second quarter, 19-16, to make it a one-point halftime Guthrie lead, 30-29.

Senior guard Edgar Baez led the way with 17 first half points with 9 of those coming from the charity stripe. Before fouling out late in the game, Baez finished with a game high 20 points.

L’liott Curry aided Guthrie with 12 of his 14 points coming in the second half. Senior Bailey Nichols also poured in a double digit night in points with 12.

El Reno’s (5-1) benched proved to be big by outscoring Guthrie’s bench 23-5. Leading the charge off the bench was Kale Owen for the seventh-ranked Indians. He finished with a team high 14 points.

Guthrie goes for the first win on the year on Friday as they travel to Western Heights.

Guthrie Scoring: Edgar Baez 20, L’liott Curry 14, Bailey Nichols 12, Landon Solorio 4, Jzmarre Moore 3, Sam Staudt 2, JD Honeycutt 1, Ja’lyn Morgan 1
