Fogarty Elementary alerts parents of crosswalk along state highway

Despite a four-way stop sign and slower traffic flows, Fogarty Elementary is warning parents about the crosswalk on State Highway 77.

School officials said some parents are dropping their children off for school by pulling into the convenience store (across from the school) to allow students to cross the street in the morning. However, the crosswalk was created for students to utilize after school.

“Unfortunately, we do not have the staffing to monitor the misuse of the crosswalk,” a social media post from the school said.

The post added that the school resource officer observed a vehicle drive through the four-way stop sign without breaking or legally stopping.

“This happens more often than you can imagine,” the post said. “Drivers are not paying attention or simply do not see the stop sign.”

School officials say the crosswalk was created for students who walk home in the afternoon.

“Please know that your child’s safety is (a) priority for us while they are in our care. We do not want to see anything happen that could be avoided. This is why we have procedures in place. Again, we do not have the staff to monitor students crossing the crosswalk.”
