The Guthrie Fire Department was recently awarded a $96,587.00 grant from the FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. This grant will be coupled with $9,658.00 in local funds to purchase automated CPR devices for their five ambulances.
These devices (similar to the photo shown) automatically perform chest compressions on a victim, freeing our personnel up to perform other lifesaving measures.
Studies have also shown that the chest compressions delivered with these devices are more effective, and at a more regular interval compared to manual chest compressions, leading to a higher chance of survival on patients in cardiac arrest.
These devices also remove the pauses when switching personnel during manual CPR.
“Our department is constantly striving for ways to improve the quality of service we provide by utilizing the latest in techniques and technology,” Fire Chief Eric Harlow said.
“We are grateful for this federal assistance program, as well as our city council, as it will allow our department to acquire vital lifesaving equipment that we might not otherwise be able to afford.”
