GFD firefighters take on tactical extrication course

Three members of the Guthrie Fire Department took part in a tactical extrication course over the weekend to continue their ongoing education.

Guthrie Fire Chief Eric Harlow, along with firefighters Jessica Wilton and James Novick, took part in the course at the spacious Edmond regional training grounds. The course saw firefighters from not only Oklahoma, but Kansas, Texas and Colorado.

Along with classroom instruction, the firefighters worked several staged vehicle accidents using not only vehicles, but school buses and semi-trucks. One scene involved a semi-truck and vehicle collision involving a utility pole.

“One of the best classes I’ve been to,” Harlow said.

Isaac Frazier, a Lieutenant on Rescue 4 for the St. Johns County Fire Department in Florida, served as the lead instructor for his company Tactical Advantage Training. Frazier’s primary rescue unit is one of the deadliest stretches of highway in the United States.

Working conditions over the weekend were favorable with cool weather on Saturday morning, but quickly turned warm and humid by Saturday afternoon, before returning to cooler air on Sunday.
