GPS to begin random drug testing for students in activities

Guthrie Public Schools will begin a random drug testing program this fall for students at the Junior High and High School who participate in extracurricular activities.

A policy existed for many years but the district had not tested students.  Last year, the Board of Education reviewed the policy and made some updates based on current practices and recommendations from its legal counsel.  The cost of testing was built into the budget for this year.  Soon, sponsors and administrators at both buildings will meet with students to explain the procedures.

“Many districts across the state have been doing this for years.  I’m thankful we can offer a reason for a student to say no to harmful substances,” Supt. Dr. Mike Simpson said in a statement.

Students who participate in extracurricular competition will be receiving a copy of the policy as well as a consent form that must be signed by the parent/guardian and returned before the student may compete.  A professional firm has been selected that specializes in drug testing including many school districts. Their staff will administer the test (urinalysis) which can detect the following:Amphetamine, Benzodiazepines, Buprenorphine, Cocaine, Fentanyl, K2/Spice (Synthetic Marijuana), Marijuana (THC), MDMA (Ecstasy), Methadone, Morphine, Methamphetamine, Oxycodone and Tramadol (TRA).

The consequence for the first positive test requires the student to attend three hours of counseling furnished by the school district, followed by a re‐test in two weeks.  The second offense will require the student to attend six hours of counseling and be suspended from participation for 14 days. The third offense will bring a suspension from participation for the remainder of the school year or one semester (whichever is longer).  Prescription medication must be in the name of the student in order to be considered a negative test.

“The consequences are designed to provide assistance to students through counseling.  Our ultimate goal is to help our students,” Simpson said.

Parents who have questions may attend a community meeting at the Guthrie High School Cafeteria on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. Representatives from the school administration and the testing company will be present to further explain the procedures. Questions may also be directed to Jon Chappell, GPS Athletic/Activities Director or Ryan Dayton, Junior High Activities Coordinator.
