GHS Baseball wins 6-4 on Senior Day

The Guthrie High School baseball team got back on the winning track in their home finale on Monday evening. The Jays will finish the regular season on Tuesday before regional play gears up on Thursday.

The Jays scored two runs in the first two innings and held off a late rally to take down Class 4A’s eighth ranked Harrah Panthers, 6-4, on Senior Day. Guthrie improved to 23-10 while Harrah falls to 27-9.

Six seniors were recognized following the game, including Camden Wilcott, Jeremiah Blackmon, Zane Maltz, Brayden Maltz, Mason Chavez and Rowdy Reihs.

Guthrie built up a 6-1 lead on just five hits as the Panthers threw six different pitchers. Both Wilcott and Maltz each scored twice.

Davenport picked up the victory in his first start of the year. Chavez got majority of the work on the mound by pitching the final four innings.

The Bluejays will conclude the regular season with a trip to Bethany on Tuesday.

Jays finish third in districts; headed to El Reno for regionals

The Shawnee Wolves looked like the defending state champions in their two games against the Bluejays last week. Shawnee picked up 3-0 and 9-0 wins behind complete-game victories pitched by Eli Davis and Tanner Sparks. The duo allowed only five hits, struck out 16 Bluejays and allowed just 14 baserunners.

With the loss, Piedmont wins District 5A-1, Shawnee finishes second and the Jays in third. Both Piedmont and Shawnee will host regionals this week.

Guthrie will travel to the El Reno regional beginning on Thursday. The Jays are matched up with Lawton MacArthur, who split their two district games with El Reno on Saturday, with a scheduled 1:30 start. El Reno matches up with Guymon in the four-team regional.

The winner of each regional will qualify for next week’s state tournament, which will be held in Yukon beginning on May 12.
