The Guthrie Board of Education approved the resignation of Guthrie High School’s interim girl’s basketball coach at Monday night’s meeting.
Sherrie Simek and the basketball program was put in a difficult spot last October when then head coach Jack Hankins resigned just days before the start of practice to go into private business.
With the late notice, Simek went from assistant to interim head coach. The Lady Jays finished the 2016-17 season with a 7-16 record.
“We really appreciate the work Coach Simek has done with our students,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson told Guthrie Sports Page.
“She has stepped up for us when we needed her in an interim status as a girl’s basketball coach and always puts kids first. She will be missed, but we wish her nothing but the best,” Simpson said.
Simek’s resignation from the school district is effectively May 23.
In addition to her basketball duties, Simek is in her sixth year in Guthrie also serves as a coach for the GHS track program and a math teacher at Guthrie High School.
