Guthrie High School senior Katherine Espinoza recently represented Guthrie at the General Tommy Franks Four-Star Leadership Conference, a prestigious summer leadership experience held at the University of Central Oklahoma.
The conference brought together 80 high school students from across the nation for a week focused on leadership, character, communication, common vision, and caring.
Students had the opportunity to hear from inspirational leaders from a variety of backgrounds, including military and political leaders. Speakers included retired U.S. Army General Tommy Franks, Green Beret Nick Lavery, University of Central Oklahoma President Todd Lamb, and rodeo cowboy Jet McCoy.
Throughout the conference, students participated in practical leadership and ethical scenarios. They competed individually in persuasive speech and writing competitions and worked together in an Ethics Bowl competition.
Espinoza and her teammates finished first in the Ethics Bowl competition, with each team member earning a scholarship to attend the University of Central Oklahoma.
General Tommy Franks, originally from Wynnewood, served 38 years in the United States Army and commanded U.S. Central Command, overseeing military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq following the September 11 attacks.
For Espinoza, the conference builds on years of leadership development through Guthrie’s JROTC program.
She joined JROTC as a freshman with the goal of improving her public speaking and overall confidence. She quickly embraced the program’s emphasis on character and leadership and became the Color Guard Commander by the spring semester of her freshman year.
Since joining JROTC, Espinoza has participated in the JROTC Cadet Leader Challenge Camp, the Military Order of the World Wars Youth Leadership Conference, where she later returned as a camp counselor, and Girls’ State.
She has served in numerous leadership positions, including Squad Leader and Company Commander, and currently serves as commander of the Scabbard and Blade Honor Society. During her upcoming senior year, she will serve as the Battalion Commander.
Espinoza plans to pursue a career centered on service. She is interested in the medical field and is pursuing an Army ROTC scholarship to attend the University of Central Oklahoma. Following completion of her degree and ROTC training, she plans to commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
“Whether I am caring for patients in the medical field or serving as an officer in the military, I hope to carry the lessons I learned into every opportunity to make a positive difference,” Espinoza said.
Her experience at the Four-Star Leadership Conference adds another accomplishment to a growing list of leadership opportunities as she prepares for her senior year at Guthrie High School.
