Guthrie to play in the playoffs

Bookmark and Share

Guthrie will be one of 16 teams to play in this week’s Class 5A playoffs.

The OSSAA Board of Directories over turned the decision from the OSSAA after hearing the appeal from the Clint Simek family and Guthrie Public Schools.

The entire Simek spoke to the board as well as took questions throughout the 4 hour and 33 minute process. Many times throughout the meeting, the board admitted that the family had done no wrong.

However, the first appeal was denied, 10-0, that will keep Simek sidelined and ineligible to play on the gridiron. Later in the evening, the Simek family spoke with the OSSAA board, who then went into executive session, but came back with no action. It is unknown at this time what the family plans to do.

The second appeal was approved by the board to allow Guthrie to play in the playoffs with a 10-0 vote and to keep the  perfect 10-0 record in tact. Both appeals had one  member abstained from voting.

Guthrie, Class 5A’s top ranked team, was unbeaten throughout the regular season (10-0), but was dropped to 2-8 when the OSSAA  ruled last week that senior Clint Simek, who moved to Guthrie with his family from Prague in the spring, was ineligible. The investigation began when the OSSAA received an anonymous letter received by the OSSAA staff in mid October.

Guthrie will play Durant this Saturday, at 2:30, as the OSSAA is expected to sign off on the agreement between the two schools. OSSAA staff member David Jackson stated through mutual agreements, and with OSSAA approval, schools can reschedule the games to Saturday at the latest so that teams can prepare for their upcoming opponent after finding out on short notice of who indeed who they would be playing.

The OSSAA handed down penalties that will immediately take effect: Rafe Watkins suspended for 8 games beginning with the upcoming playoff game(s), but will be allowed to coach throughout the week, Clint Simek will not be allowed to play football, but will be eligible to play other sports after the football season, Guthrie must forfeit all gate proceeds in the (one or two) playoff games and the football team placed on warning for one year.

Several board members mentioned throughout the hearing that this case has been one of the toughest decisions they have ever had to make. The board went into two different executive sessions before coming to their final decisions.

  1. This is a complete JOKE!! All the OSSAA did today was weaken a state. Guess it pays to have the President of the OSSAA as the Super of the Guthrie School district! Did i mention his is a joke? NO BUSINESS being in the playoffs

  2. does suspension include practices? does he get 2 attend games? ~ meaning rafe

  3. congrats guthrie.. ossaa made themselve look foolish with this one.. glad for your kids though

  4. Just goes to everyone in oklahoma highschool football it does pay to cheat and play dirty good job guthrie keep up the dirty work

    • cheat and play dirty? I take offense to that, my son along with many upstanding young men play on that UNDEFEATED team. Hope you never have to experience how wrenching it was to see what these boys have gone thru since Wednesday, they definitely behaved more mature than this shallow post.

      • I agree with you, I also have a son that plays on this team. It was heart wrenching see what these boys have gone thru.

    • when you live in a boring, unsuccessful town. only natural to feel Jealous! easy to go elsewhere and torment Champions =)

    • Danny, didn’t you learn about run-on sentences in grade school? Do you know what punctuation is? You are so illiterate that it is tough just trying to read your posts. Please have someone check them before you hit send.

  5. Seriously People!!! Get over it. Until they control the private sector, nothing should be done about the public sector. Remember it’s for the kids, not the adults!!!!!

    Play hard Jays!!!!

  6. Was not trying to be negative we just got caught doing same thing in jenks it just worked out better for u guys

  7. Besides i know everything i need to know about u . You think your better than anyone else its hard to see who your stepping on with your nose stuck up in the air

  8. Wow you must be a leader your church calling everyone that does does not play for guthrie losers did you know jesus loved your so called losers d bag

  9. Wow! Glad I don’t live in Jenks.

  10. I don’t understand if the apeal was upheld, why is coach watkins and the kid involved not able to participate in this weeks game? it was showed that there was no wrong doing and now the school has to forfeit all monies from gate and concessions? maybe guthrie shouldn’t charge to get in the game and the OSSAA don’t get a dime that they will probably divide up and put in their pockets. The OSSAA is a joke.

    • Maybe we should charge a nickel to get in? Or match the entrance fee in a donation to the Booster Club!

    • I think the decision to not force the forfeits makes sense…Simek’s contribution was not so great that we could have lost without him. Yet, something WAS done wrong (clerical error) and there was no intent to hide anything. So, a penalty is appropriate and it’s unusual to see someone say, “Punish me – I did wrong – don’t punish these kids who did nothing wrong.” He’s a good coach and a good man. He knows what’s important. Though it’s really too bad we can’t get him to rub off on Simpson a little bit… that guy is NOT of the same cloth, for sure! He’d blame it on his assistant if he could…but NEVER has this man EVER admitted he’s made a mistake. Some of us are just waiting to see him walk on the water because clearly that’s what he’s convinced the school board he’s capable of. Not true…they’re blind…but that’s another topic for another day. Sure wish he (Simpson) would resign over this but we can’t get that lucky. I say resign because I know the BOE will NEVER hold him accountable for any part in this. Never.

      • Wonderfully said! On all points!

      • Simpson a joke, the school board is a bigger joke. They cut the teachers pay (or with held their raises) and then gave the superintendent a huge pay raise. The teachers are making less money than the minimum that is set up by the state. I’m not even sure if that is legal. If I was a teacher I would be trying to get this investigated. If anything fishy is going on, it is with that school board, but that is another story…

  11. Tell me one thing i know the awnser but ill ask anyway would you be this upset if it were a band member

    • Again, you’re ridiculous, get outside and get some fresh air and step away from the computer
and heck yes OUR BAND ROCKS!

    • I would! I’m a band mom and I would be very upset if my kid spent all year practicing and then was told they had to forfeit the trophies they won and my son would have to sit out over a piece of documentation not being filled out properly. It wouldn’t make front page because it’s not a high interest story, but I can guarantee that the school administrators would be just as passionate!

I agree 100% and just a note, Guthrie has one of the best high school bands in the state. They work just as hard as the football team.
        Go Jays!

    • Man Danny, you should know the answer to that one… these people love their kids and it doesn’t matter if it’s football, band or special olympics. Stupid question.

  12. I was always told that the only stupid question is one you already know the answer to…

  13. Hey Danny Boy does Jenks shut down the streets so the band can play and warm up? And does the Jenks Booster Club feed the community prior to a game? And Do Jenks business pay a price to allow anyone in Guthrie to eat for free prior to a game? The Coach got his hands slapped because of a paperwork error. He didn’t deliberately try to hide anything and that’s all this is about. he got suspended and we’re sorry for that. But he has fantastic assistants working for him, the best players playing for him and a community that’s 100% behind him. The association or any other town regardless of what is sent our way can take that away to include your jealousy. We’re happy to let the coach sit out a few games and take a break, he’s earned it.

  14. Danny Boy Just to clarify I put Guthrie because yes you could come from Jenks and eat for free because we’re just that kind of place.

  15. Stop hatin Danny boy get real . Guthries where it’s at I bet u we could smash jerks bitch boi!

  16. Is it just me or does “Danny” (fake name probably) seem like that guy “OU” who was posting rude stuff about Guthrie the other day? If not, they must be talking because he is saying the same stuff OU did.

  17. This post is for the OSSAA members: If you don’t let these kids play football after they went
10-0, then you are just like the guy at Penn State who molested kids. You will be doing the same thing by raping these kids of all of their hard work and damaging them for life.

    • Daddy-O, or daddy zero, I hope your comment is deleted because it is really gross. If you are a parent you should be ashamed of yourself for posting something so stupid. Child abuse should never be compared to football and you posted this on November 10th when the OSSAA already decided that Guthrie would be in the playoffs so it’s just dumb. Pay attention and save us the gross comments. Rude.

  18. Im not the ou guy i was just wandering if guthrie felt the same way about all students like i know that everyone knows that the bluejays are 10-0 but besides band members and parents know where guthrie finished at oba without looking i do

    • Danny, you need grammar lessons because you don’t makes sense “Im not the ou guy i was just wandering if guthrie felt the same way about all students like i know that everyone knows that the bluejays are 10-0 but besides band members and parents know where guthrie finished at oba without looking i do” More dumb questions that you try to look like statements. Our town announces the band stuff just like they do the football stuff, choir stuff, soccer stuff…. If you don’t live here, why do you care? In your town things must be very different because you keep saying things that aren’t true and you are probably saying them becuase it is how it is in your town. Rude.

  19. Im not from jenks i just like to see how people who call themselves christians act over football i am truly sorry for what guthrie was going thru but to compare this with a child abuser is no comparison and i agree your band does rock

  20. I did not curse at anyone so there was no need that ok. Would guthrie be upset for another team if they were going thru the same thing or would you react harshly

    • I think OSSAA should update there rules because they are outdated. Alot of people have second homes or homes on the market for sale. Guthrie parents and students have a special bond because we have been together for so long and we don’t get alot of new students and we like the band as much as the football team and it’s the same for choir, drama, stuco, and everything else. We are super supportive of each other and I think you are jealous so you are saying anything to make people mad but you sound like “OU” and we all called him a joke on the other stuff he posted. You sound just like OU asking dumb questions like they are statements and you don’t even know us so you are probably OU.

  21. Daddy-O :This post is for the OSSAA members: If you don’t let these kids play football after they went10-0, then you are just like the guy at Penn State who molested kids. You will be doing the same thing by raping these kids of all of their hard work and damaging them for life.

You sir, are a complete idiot. You should maybe consider putting down the beer before posting such a dumba** comment. Comparing the physical molestation of young children, to high school kids not making the playoffs, shows a real lack of class and a small intellectual level. I hope your pathetic viewpoint is not shared by the rest of the community in which you live. If you truly believe the two situations are comparable, you need to go out into the “real” world.

    • I agree with Brian. We were all upset, but too compare the two situations is stupid. I don’t think these boys will be damaged for life because of football. These boys are alot smarter than that and they know its a game.

  22. Yes sir I will be an idiot just for you. You sound like a “Guthrie Hater Faggot” who is mad as hell because they get to play in the playoffs. You probably have molested little boys before and now you are mad because your friend at Penn State got caught. You probably was there with him when this happened.

    • Daddy-O, you are super gross and you should stop posting dumb stuff. You must be like Danny and OU, maybe you are the same person, because you post nasty stuff that does not belong on a blog. It’s not about if I agree with you or not, but you can at least not be so rude and gross. You can be supportive of the Jays without all that rudeness. I think you are just posting like you are a fan of Guthrie just to make it look like you are a dumb person from Guthrie but it won’t work.

      • You need to go kick rocks. I make over 7 figures a year and live in a 6000 Sq.Ft. house. I have (2) degrees from college. Operate my own business and you say I am the dumb one. I laugh at you. Ha Ha Ha

  23. Proud to be a Blue Jay and can’t wait till Saturday! I’ll be painted up and shouting loud for the cheeleaders and the band and the football team that will be performing like champions! Oh, and if the choir is singing the national anthem again and the jr. rotc is doing the flag salute, like all of Guthrie, we will cheer for them too! Go Blue Jays!

  24. Thank you for calling me a joke i am not the ou guy ok and i did not call anybody names. I just dont agree with what was said yesterday that everyone that is not guthrie are losers. For being christians you really dont act like it. try praying more

    • First of all, I didn’t see a single post where someone was saying they were a christian but I guess I could have overlooked it. I will pray for you because you think missing a game can be compared to someone molesting children and I’m sorry that I don’t have the time to explain it to you but it’s not the same. Even the football players would be offended by what you wrote, but they are really smart and get good grades. You are probably OU and dropped out of school so you don’t know the difference. You posted your dumb comment after the decision was made and it was stupid and old news. It didn’t even make sense to post it today.

  25. God sees everyone as equal no matter who they are. The entire earth was molded by God not just certian parts

    • Danny you don’t make sense. God doesn’t see us as equal, read the Bible, we are all unique with different and distinct gifts. I learned that in Bible school when I was little. God also searches for those who are not saved and you are probably at the top of his list after what you posted about comparing football and child molestation.

  26. Daddy-O :Yes sir I will be an idiot just for you. You sound like a “Guthrie Hater Faggot” who is mad as hell because they get to play in the playoffs. You probably have molested little boys before and now you are mad because your friend at Penn State got caught. You probably was there with him when this happened.

Actually, I am just an interested observer. I am honestly happy the OSSAA reinstated Guthrie’s football program. “In order to be the best, you have to beat the best” and clearly right now, Guthrie is the best in 5A. I would not want an asterek by the team I root for’s name, or a doubt in anyone’s mind, that they beat the best in the end. With that being said, you do not have to be an idiot “for me”, you have proven you do that very well for yourself.

  27. Hey bloo i never compared those two things why dont you read who wrote it and what i was saying about God was no one is above anyone else. I am a christian and you are out of line to judge. I will hold myself acountable and. why dont you?

First, I’d like to say I’m glad the football players aren’t going to be penalized for what a coach has said is his fault.

One thing that bothers me is that the coach is suffering little to no penalty. Some people are even hailing him as somebody who sacrificed himself for the good of the team. If the OSSAA had ruled against the team, the coach would have been sitting anyway – he gained a lot by his appeal; he didn’t sacrifice anything!
As I understand the above article, the coach isn’t banned from coaching, just from being on the sideline on game night. This is effective for 8 games. 4 of them (likely) will be playoff games – games the team would not have been in without this decision. 3 will be non-district games that have no bearing on making the playoffs. So it amounts to a 1 game game-night only suspension as concerns the playoffs.

The only person really being punished in this is the boy. The OSSAA and the coach stated the boy (and family) DID EVERYTHING REQUIRED. How is that fair? The coach made the error – he still gets his team in the playoffs (very possibly a state championship), gets to coach every day, while the boy sits.

I think it’s really sad that nobody advocated for that boy along with the rest of the team. If he was allowed to play and the coach was suspended from all coaching for a year or two, that would be much fairer than the decision the OSSAA made. I’m not even saying that’s what should happen – only that it would make more sense than the decision rendered.

No kids should suffer for administrative mistakes. Administrators have to know the rules and should be the ones to pay the price if they are not followed – not the athletes.

  29. Joel, the boy in question had an attorney representing him and his family.

    • Joel Rutherford | November 10, 2011 at 3:12 pm | Reply

Did the boy having an attorney present somehow keep the coach or anyone else from offering to take a penalty in place in the boy’s place? Or did an attorney being present keep the OSSAA from not including this boy in the group of other innocent team members?
This just seems like such an arbitrary and unfair decision to me.

  30. Hey bloo let me get this straight im either a witch or athiest because i disagree with you wow you will need to post the scripture so i can verify it. I will have you know i am a christian. Very proud of it too. Im not perfect by any means niether are u

  31. And bloo i never compared the issue with guthrie and penn state. That was that sick freak daddy o. thats discusting i may talk smack sometimes but i dont even cross certain lines ok.

In response to Danny’s earlier comment, our school board cares about the band just as much as the football team. Guthrie is a great community & their football team deserves a playoff! I actually attended Guthrie, but transferred to Deer Creek when I was in the 8th grade. Tonya Nichols, did you have a son who played football & a son who is in the GHS band? That has nothing to do with playoffs, I was just wondering.

  33. I am happy for our Guthrie High School Football team, the students and our community for the decision. The team truly deserves the opportunity to play for a chance at the State Championship Title. However, I am disappointed that the high school player this issue revolves around will miss the playoffs because he has done nothing wrong. I am also disappointed that we will loose Coach Watkins for eight games. I feel strongly that Terry Simpson is ultimately responsible for this situation and should be held accountable not the Coach. According to the OSSAA website, The paperwork for a new students must be completed by the student and parent and signed by the Coach. Then the School’s Administrator must verify that all needed information has been completed and turned in with the School Administrator signature. If a new student athlete enrolls as a bona-fide resident of a school district, but the family still owns, rents, or maintains a home in another school district, the Residence Affirmation Form must be completed and signed by the School Administrator (per the OSSAA website). Terry Simpson is on the OSSAA Board of Directors and should have a understanding of what is needed in this this situation. He should have processes in place that protects our School District with the proper checks and balances that make sure all needed paperwork is turned in to the correct people at the correct time. As a member of the OSSAA Board of Directors he has accepted the responsibility to enforce the rules set fourth by the governing body for all schools. Yet, he could not even manage to keep our head coach and a innocent high school player safe by insuring that we follow OSSAA rules. We also must forfeit the opportunity for many thousands of dollars in gate ticket sales during the playoffs because this issue. In business the buck stops at the top, and in my opinion, that is the Key Administrator for the school, also known as the Superintendent.
