Guthrie appeals to be heard Wednesday morning

Bookmark and Share

The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association will hear two appeals from Guthrie High School Wednesday morning at a regular scheduled board meeting.

The meeting is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.

The OSSAA agenda has the Guthrie appeals labeled as the following: 1) Clint Simek and Guthrie Public School are appealing OSSAA Staff’s decision regarding his determination of being an ineligible athlete 2) Guthrie Public School is appealing the penalties imposed for using an ineligible athlete in eight football games.

It is expected OSSAA Executive Secretary Ed Sheakley will speak to the board of directors about their (OSSAA) findings and penalties imposed on Guthrie. Following Sheakley’s presentation, Guthrie will then have their chance to address the board.

The board consists of 14 members, but Guthrie Superintendent Terry Simpson is the NW Quadrant, Division I member and will not be allowed to vote. Guthrie would need to receive seven votes to over turn the decision(s). If a tie were to occur in the voting it would result in a status quo and the penalties would remain in place.

The OSSAA ruled that Clint Simek, of the Guthrie football team, had a dual residency issue.

If upheld, Guthrie, who is currently ranked No. 1 in Class 5A with an unbeaten 10-0 record, will be forced to forfeit eight of their 10 wins this season and thus – would miss the playoffs.

The OSSAA received an anonymous letter on October 19th that sparked the investigation of the player’s family living in Guthrie, but having a family member living in the previous home, that is for sale and has been on the market for several months, in another Oklahoma town.

The player’s family that is being questioned moved into the Guthrie school district last spring and was signed off by the player’s former high school.

Guthrie Sports Page will be at the board meeting and will be reporting throughout the day. You can follow the updates here.
