Guthrie cancels class for Thursday, Friday due to teacher walkout

Guthrie Public Schools has canceled classes for the rest of the week as teachers continue to fight for an increase in education.

The school district says they will not hold classes on Thursday, April 5 and Friday, April 6.

School was also canceled the previous three days of the school week.

“This closure is needed due to the number of teachers indicating they will be absent far exceeding the number of substitute teachers available,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said.

The district says they will consider the ability to staff teacher absences on a day by day basis.

Parents and guardians are asked during this time away from the classroom to be mindful of the preparation time necessary for students to do their best on the upcoming Oklahoma School Testing Program. The Oklahoma State Department of Education has established practice test sites where students may take a practice test from home to better prepare for the tests. The practice tests may be accessed at this link.

On Monday, several teachers said they would stay at the Capitol as long as it takes to get their message across to lawmakers.

Last month, the Oklahoma Education Association announced that it is seeking a $10,000 pay raise for Oklahoma teachers over three years, a $5,000 pay raise for support professionals over three years, a cost-of-living adjustment for retirees, and the restoration of funding for education and core government services.
