Guthrie defense dominates Southeast in 28-0 victory

The Bluejay defense flexed their muscles for the fourth straight week by keeping Southeast to just seven yards of offense in a 28-0 win inside Jelsma Stadium on Friday night.

With the victory, the Jays clinch a playoff spot for the 11th consecutive season and improve to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in district play. Southeast (0-5) drops their fifth straight game. Guthrie has won all six meetings with the Spartans dating back to 2006. In the six games, Guthrie has outscored the Spartans 290-13 with five shut-outs.

Guthrie held Southeast to negative 62 yards in the running game, including 11 sacks, eight punts, two turnovers and 2-12 on three and fourth down conversions. The Spartans did not generate a positive running play until the second half.

Linebacker Cal Davis finished with 12 tackles and three sacks in the dominating performance.

In the last four district games (Piedmont, Western Heights, Guymon and Southeast), the Guthrie defense has allowed a grand total of 30 rushing yards.

Now, the heart of the schedule begins this week for the Jays as they travel to Carl Albert, host Deer Creek on Senior Night and in the first round of playoffs will play either Altus, Ardmore or Lawton MacArthur.

The Guthrie offense started off sluggish behind backup quarterback Rowdy Reihs, but got things going in the second and third quarters. The offense finished with 325 yards, including 238 yards on the ground.

Leading the running game was senior Kevin Blue, who finished with 124 yards on 12 carries (10.3 average per carry). Blue got the scoring going in the first quarter with a dazzling 44-yard run into the south end zone.

The Jays took advantage of a poor punt midway in the second quarter and drove 39 yards in six plays for a Reihs 1-yard run to pull ahead 14-0.

Guthrie was back on the scoreboard just before the half with a four-play 50 yard drive. This time Reihs hit senior wide receiver Chance Whitt with a 14-yard score over the middle of the Spartans defense.

In a quick played second half, the Jays scored one final time early in the third quarter with a 5-yard run from Reihs.
