Guthrie falls in regional championship to Piedmont

Guthrie Head Coach Breck Clark finishes with a time out with her team inside the GHS gymnasium.

The third time was the charm against Noble on Thursday, but that was not the case Saturday.

Piedmont erupted for 25 first-quarter points only to see Guthrie rally in the second quarter. But it was simply not enough. Piedmont defeats Guthrie for the third time this season and advances to the area finals with a 52-43 win.

Guthrie must win two games next week at Edmond North to qualify for the 5A state tournament.

Down 11 at the first quarter, 25-14, Guthrie went on a 12-0 run to take a one-point lead, 26-25. Piedmont would end the half on an 8-3 run to go into the locker room up 33-29.

In the third quarter, Guthrie managed only 7 points on two field goals and found themselves down 10, 46-36.

Both teams struggled offensively in the final quarter.

Guthrie senior Anjewl Murillo fouled out with 4:43 left in the game with 14 points. 12 of those came in the first half.

Guthrie will next play Guymon in an elimination game at Edmond North Thursday at 7:30 p.m. With a win, Guthrie would play Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
