Guthrie Fire Department’s Captain Drew Hymer named Firefighter of the Year

The Guthrie Fire Department is celebrating one of its own after Captain Drew Hymer was named Firefighter of the Year during the 8th Annual Heroes in the Heartland Conference in Norman.

The award recognizes Hymer’s outstanding dedication, leadership, professionalism, and commitment to serving both the department and the community.

“Please join us in congratulating Captain Hymer on being named Firefighter of the Year,” the department said in announcing the honor. “This well-deserved honor recognizes Captain Hymer’s outstanding dedication, leadership, professionalism, and commitment to serving our community. Thank you for your hard work, sacrifice, and the example you set for others every day.”

Hymer was promoted to captain in February and has served with the Guthrie Fire Department since 2008. Department leadership has consistently recognized him as a significant asset throughout his career.

In addition to his service with the department, Hymer continues to advance his professional education. He is currently enrolled in paramedic school and is expected to graduate later this year.

Among his many accomplishments, Hymer is also a member of the Oklahoma Smoke Divers, an elite firefighting training organization. He graduated from Class 2 and earned the designation of OSD 51, a distinction that reflects advanced training and a commitment to excellence in the fire service.

The recognition was presented during the 8th Annual Heroes in the Heartland Conference, which brings together first responders, public safety professionals, and educators from across Oklahoma and neighboring states.

The conference was founded in honor of Logan County Deputy Sheriff David Wade, who was killed in the line of duty in 2017. Organizers say the event continues to carry forward Wade’s legacy of service, sacrifice, and dedication to protecting others.
