Guthrie gets win; looking for 20 today

As the Guthrie BlueJay baseball team awaits the official word of hosting a Class 5A regional this season, that will be announced on Friday, they are participating in the Deer Creek East-West Classic.

Guthrie tries to join Deer Creek and Carl Albert in the 20 win club in Class 5A when they take on Bishop McGuinness today with an 11am first pitch after run ruling the Newcastle Racers on day one.

The Jays collected 11 runs in the first three innings against Newcastle and cruised the rest of the way for an 11-3 final to improve their record to 19-8. With the win, Guthrie has won two games in a row and winners of six of their last 10 games.

Prior to the Newcastle game, the Jays had an unusual five-day break from action with mother nature playing her part.

The blue birds will have their work cut out for them in joining the 20 win club with the Irish. McGuinness has taken both games this season with 6-5 and 18-2 wins in early March and April, respectively.

The Irish picked up two wins on day one of the tournament with convincing wins over Western Heights (15-3) and El Reno (15-6).  In the other game of the tournament, 5A’s top ranked Deer Creek slid past Newcastle 5-3.

Day Two Schedule

11:00 – Guthrie vs McGuinness
1:30 – Western Heights vs Durant
4:00 – El Reno vs Miami
6:30 – Deer Creek vs Miami
