The Guthrie High School cross country teams made the most of racing at home Saturday. The Lady Jays won the third annual Oklahoma 5A Public School Cross Country Championships at Cottonwood Flats, while the Bluejays finished second in a boys’ race decided by just two points.
Guthrie’s girls scored 67 points to edge Sapulpa’s 69. Four Lady Jays finished in the top 15, and all five scoring runners placed among the top 25.
Senior Taylor Schroder led Guthrie with an eighth-place finish in 20:09.56. Freshmen Ruby Richardson and Reece Piersol followed in ninth and 10th, finishing in 20:16.53 and 20:18.95. Freshman Kamryn Vick placed 15th in 20:37.44, and junior Laina Richardson completed the scoring in 25th at 21:30.00.
Avelyn Sallee finished 35th for Guthrie, while Addison Poupard placed 64th. Durant senior Avery Sager won the girls’ individual race in 19:04.73.
The Guthrie boys came even closer to a championship. Sapulpa totaled 72 points, just ahead of the Bluejays’ 74.
Sophomore Aiden Foster led Guthrie with a runner-up finish in 16:18.09. Senior Josiah Dement placed fifth in 16:33.66, and senior Wyatt Watson took seventh in 16:49.50. Sophomore Izaiah Galloway gave the Bluejays a fourth runner in the top 16, finishing in 17:25.21.
Senior Brooks Terry completed Guthrie’s team score with a 44th-place finish in 18:25.71. Preston Williams placed 52nd, and Maddox McFarlane finished 59th. Collinsville senior Jordan Rangel won the boys’ individual title in 15:57.25.
The Lady Jays’ two-point victory and the Bluejays’ two-point runner-up finish gave Guthrie one of the strongest combined performances at the meet it hosted.
