After years of planning, meetings, and work behind the scenes, the City of Guthrie broke ground Sept. 29 on the future Fire Station No. 2, a project intended to improve emergency response times and expand coverage throughout the department’s service area.
The new station, located at Division Street and Sooner Road, carries a price tag of just under $5 million. Completion is expected by the end of July 2027. The city purchased the land from a nearby church in December 2024.
Guthrie firefighters currently serve more than 500 square miles throughout Logan County from a single station. The additional facility will help improve Fire and EMS coverage, with quick access to Interstate 35.
“Fire Station No. 2 is an investment in the future of Guthrie,” City Manager Eddie Faulkner said. “As our community continues to grow, we have to make sure our public safety infrastructure grows with it. This project will help us provide faster, more reliable Fire and EMS response for residents, businesses and visitors throughout our community.”
Crossland Construction will provide construction management oversight, while GH2 Architects provided the architectural design.
The project is funded through the Growing Guthrie Initiative, which extended the city’s Capital Improvement Project sales tax. Guthrie voters approved the extension in April 2024 to support infrastructure and community improvements.
Additional funding comes through the Oklahoma Department of Commerce’s P3 Pooled Finance Program. Through that program, the city partnered with Environmental Management Inc., Guthrie Public Schools, Oklahoma Home Center/Ace Hardware and Companion Health.
According to the city, the partnership captures eligible state withholding tax revenue generated by the participating entities and directs those funds toward the station’s construction. The arrangement provides another funding source while allowing local businesses and organizations to contribute to the community’s emergency response infrastructure.
City officials said continued residential and commercial growth in Guthrie and surrounding areas has increased the need for another strategically located response facility.
At the groundbreaking, Faulkner thanked the groups that helped advance the project, including Crossland Construction, GH2 Architects, Myers Engineering, local businesses, Senator Chuck Hall and the CIP committee.
The city also recognized the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, Oklahoma Finance Authorities, Guthrie Fire-EMS, Mayor Ropp and City Council members, CIP #2 Committee members and community members. Officials offered special appreciation to Hall and his office for supporting infrastructure programs and funding opportunities.
The fire department plans to share updates as construction progresses toward the anticipated summer 2027 opening.
