Students and staff from the Guthrie Job Corps Center’s Hard Trades departments took part in an industry-focused site visit on April 29 to IBEW Local Union 1141 in Oklahoma City.
IBEW 1141 represents trained, highly-skilled power professionals in the Oklahoma City metro.
The visit provided students with a closer look at registered apprenticeship programs and the expectations required for careers in electrical and specialized trades. Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with union leadership and learn about the structure and standards of the profession.
Students were introduced to the “earn while you learn” apprenticeship model, which allows individuals to gain hands-on experience while receiving pay and training. The visit also highlighted the long-term advantages of union careers, including competitive wages and comprehensive benefits.
Officials say the experience offered valuable real-world insight as students prepare to enter the workforce in skilled trades.
