Guthrie Public Schools remains committed to honoring the class of 2020 appropriately. The school district says they continue to research options where they can have a graduation ceremony that will be safe for their students and community.
“We appreciate the patience of everyone, especially the Senior Class of 2020,” Supt. Dr. Mike Simpson said. “This situation has been changing rapidly and in many cases everything is beyond our control.”
The district has developed a plan in an effort to preserve the traditional ceremony.
If social distancing restrictions are lifted by Friday, June 26, a graduation ceremony will be held at Jelsma Stadium beginning at 8 p.m. In the event of inclement weather on that evening and social distancing remains lifted, the event will be moved to Saturday, June 27 at 8 p.m.
In the event that social distancing restrictions are not lifted by June 26 or 27, graduation ceremonies will be at Jelsma Stadium on Friday, July 17 at 8 p.m. following the guidelines in place at that time.
If social distancing restrictions are lifted prior to either date, there will be a full ceremony. In the event that social distancing restrictions remain in place, the ceremony will have restricted attendance where each senior will be issued four guest tickets and the ceremony will be reduced in order to limit the number of people in the stadium.
Facemasks may be required to attend the ceremony based on the current recommendations in place at the time of the ceremony.
Regardless of the date, Guthrie News Page will broadcast the ceremony in its entirety. In all cases, this current plan is subject to changing conditions and recommendations by the Oklahoma State Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control.
