Guthrie school placed on alert following suspicious person; no threat found

Guthrie Upper Elementary School was placed on alert Tuesday morning as the Guthrie Police Department checked for a suspicious person that walked through the school grounds.

The elementary school was placed on “shelter in place” status at 9:10 a.m. after a school resource officer was informed a man walked by a classroom window and looked inside.

The officer found the man matching the description in a nearby neighborhood (Hill Addition). The person was not deemed a credible threat after being interviewed. Police say they will continue to follow up on the case.

The alert status was lifted at 9:35 a.m.

School officials say shelter in place is not a full lockdown but rather a stop of all outside student or staff traffic. During that time, staff verifies all doors are secure.

Parents with children at the school were notified by an automated calling system and email.
