Guthrie Softball opens 2026 season with high expectations

With the season opener just weeks away, the Guthrie Lady Jays softball team is preparing for another season with high expectations. A veteran roster, experienced pitching staff, and a mix of returning talent and new coaching additions have the Lady Jays aiming for another deep postseason run under head coach Kara Tarrant.

Tarrant enters her third season as Guthrie’s head coach and her 15th year coaching within the Lady Jays softball program.

She will be joined by assistant coaches Ron Gillet and Morgan Dutton, who joins the Guthrie staff after coaching at Kingfisher High School. Tarrant said the coaching staff is still settling into its roles but believes the additional experience will allow her to spend more time focusing on game management and strategy during contests.

The Lady Jays have reached the state tournament in each of the past five seasons but have fallen short of capturing a state championship. With nearly every key contributor returning, Tarrant believes this year’s team has the pieces to make another championship run.

“We have strong pitching, and all of our pitchers are returning,” Tarrant said. “Along with that, almost all of our hitters are returning, strengthening our offense.”

Tarrant expects this year’s team to perform as well as—or even better than—last season’s squad as the program continues to build toward its ultimate goal.

The season begins with the prestigious Trina Wheeler Tournament in Pryor, where Guthrie will face several of Oklahoma’s top programs. The tournament provides an early opportunity to measure the Lady Jays against teams they could see later in the postseason while also helping establish statewide rankings.

“I want the girls to feel prepared going into that so they don’t play tight or stressed,” Tarrant said.

Carl Albert is expected to once again be Guthrie’s biggest challenge in district play. If the Lady Jays can navigate district competition, they are projected to host a regional tournament and position themselves for another trip to the state tournament.

Guthrie will open the season at the Trina Wheeler Tournament before hosting its first home game on Tuesday, Aug. 25, as the Lady Jays begin another pursuit of a state championship.
