Guthrie welcomes the Jets, Homecoming to Jelsma

For the second straight week an opponent will be seeking their first win of the season against the top-ranked Guthrie BlueJays. The bad news for the Western Heights Jets is there a lot of items that will not favor them when they travel down Interstate 35 to Jelsma Stadium for the Jays Homecoming evening.

Western HeightsGuthrie (4-0, 1-0) will be heavy favorites when the Jets arrive to town on what could be a weather alert type night with expected heavy rain and high winds. The district game is set to kick at 7 p.m. with the radio pregame scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Triple Play Sports or at Guthrie Sports Page.

Western Heights (0-4, 0-1) return four offensive starters and will look to attack with the spread offense for head coach Ed Polly. Heights has been only to manage five wins dating back to 2008.

The Jets are looking to improve on offense after scoring 10 points or more just three different times in 2012. In the past two weeks, against both Piedmont and Northwest Classen, the Jets have put up 12 points and are averaging 7-points a contest so far on the year.

The offensive numbers and matchups do not bode well for the Jets who will be challenged by the top defense in Class 5A – again this year.

Guthrie has allowed only 500 yards of offense all season long and even more impressive are holding opponents to an unheard of negative 5-yards rushing the ball.

The Jets defense is hoping to be aggressive in stopping the Jays running game that is running 265 yards per game led by running back Kai Callins. The senior tailback has rushed over 100 yards in each of the four games for an average of 135.5 per game.

Quarterback Reed Roberts has not been called upon so far in the passing game, but has shown when he does throw he’s likely going to be on target. The senior has connected on 23 of his 33 passes, including five scores.

The BlueJays are 10-2 all-time in homecoming games under head coach Rafe Watkins and have won the last three by a combined score of 166-0, including a 48-0 win over Heights in 2011.
