Irish score early in 28-7 win over Bluejays

McGuinness stand-out Rubell Goe hauled in two touchdown receptions in the first quarter and a third in the second quarter to give the Irish a halftime lead and the eventual win inside Jelsma Stadium.

Guthrie scored a late touchdown to overcome a second shut-out of the season. McGuinness won their fourth straight game with a 28-7 win over the Jays.

The Irish (4-1, 2-0) have defeated the Jays in the past two seasons leads the overall series 5-4 dating back to 2004.

Overall, Guthrie (2-3, 0-2) has dropped three straight games after jumping out to a 2-0 start for the first time in over 17 years.

Goe hauled in touchdown scores of 36, 47 and 34 yards. He finished with four catches for 119 yards. In addition, the senior hauled in two interceptions.

McGuinness hosts Carl Albert (5-0, 2-0) for the presumptive district title this week.

The Jays, trailing 28-0, scored with 1:59 left in the game with quarterback Jackson Waddell hitting Marcellous Owens with a pass. Owens broke a tackle, utilized a stiff arm and out ran the Irish secondary into the south end zone for the 68-yard score.

The Jays offense continues to try and find their identity with just 14 points during the three-game losing skid. Against the Irish, Guthrie rushed for 123 while passing 73 yards.

Senior Ty Doolin carried the ball 24 times for 96 yards to lead the Jays in the ground game.

Guthrie returns to the gridiron on Thursday when they travel to Taft Stadium and take on Northwest Classen. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
