Jays drop Shawnee in season opener

The Guthrie Bluejays received over 200 rushing yards combined from senior quarterback Josh Rains and sophomore running back Isiah Hammons in a 34-16 season opening win over the Shawnee Wolves.

With the victory, Guthrie has won their last three season openers and six of the last seven seasons.

Shawnee started the game with a 57-yard drive to go up 7-0, but the Jays responed with two scores of their own with one yard touchdown runs by Rains to go up 14-7 with 9:20 left in the second quarter.

The Wolves tack on the last three points of the half with a 25-yard field goal to send the game into the half, 14-10.

The Jays got a boost early in the third quarter when sophomore Jackson Walters. Walters blitzed the Wolves punter from the left side, snag the football on the attempted punt and ran in from 10 yards out to push the score 21-10.

Later in the third quarter, Hammons scored his first varsity touchdown from 45 yards out as he displayed a burst of speed out of the backfield. Guthrie lead 27-10 with 1:57 left in the third.

Guthrie put the game away with Rains’ third score of the night. This time from 20 yards away. He finished with 20 carries for 131 yards.

In his debut, Hammons ran for 78 yards on just 12 carries.

The Bluejay defense once again was solid after a slow start on Shawnee’s opening drive. The Wolves managed 175 yards of offense on 49 plays.

Shawnee did not help themselves with 14 accepted penalties for 114 yards.

Guthrie goes on the road on Friday to Putnam City West. It will be the first meeting between the two programs. Related article: Watch: Guthrie Football at Putnam City West
