Junior Lady Jays Softball off to a 2-1 start

The Guthrie Lady Jays Junior High Softball team has taken advantage of their schedule to begin their season by winning two of three games.

Guthrie third baseman Trista LeGrande charges in on a ball Monday evening against Piedmont.

Unlike their varsity counterparts, who have played their first 14 games away from home, the Junior Jays have played all three of their games at home.

The Jays started the season with a 4-0 win over fellow Logan County foe Crescent Tigers and turned around the next day and handled Perkins with ease with an 18-3 final in last weeks game’s.

Bailey Shaffer picked up both wins for Guthrie in the circle.

However, the Lady Jays suffered their first set back Monday evening, at the high school field, to Piedmont, 5-0. View the Piedmont photo gallery.

Both teams proved to be stubborn with base runners in the first three innings before the Lady Wildcats opened the game with five runs in the top half of the fourth inning.

In the inning, Piedmont collected three hits and took advantage of three Lady Jay errors, two stolen bases, and one walk to collect four runs. All of that came with no outs in the frame. Guthrie collected a 4-3 double play to collect the first outs, but a ball to the back stop allowed another run to scored before getting a fly out to third baseman Trista LeGrande.

However, the damage was done and resulted in the only runs in the game.

Guthrie was not able to bring anyone across the plate in the five inning game. Shaffer took the pitching loss to match the team record at 2-1.

The Lady Jays return back to the field, on Tuesday, when they travel to Deer Creek. The junior varsity starts at 5:00 with the varsity to follow. They will finish the week with the Kingfisher Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
