The next stop for Heidi Kuruvilla, Sarah Howells and Carrisa Mathena is the 2011 State Tennis Tournament next week.
Carrisa Mathena serves it over the net over in the recent regional. Mathena will next be serving in the State Tournament.
The trio advanced after Kuruvilla’s fourth place finish in No. 2 singles as Howells and Mathena combined for a second place finish in No. 2 doubles at the Class 5A West regional, at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center, Monday afternoon.
Cheyenne Royal, Brooke Powell and Taylar Swartzbaugh just missed out on making the tourney with fifth place finishes.
Kuruvilla dropped her first match to her opponent from Harrah 6-3, 6-1 and won her second match against Tulsa East Central 6-0, 6-0. In her third round match she defeated El Reno 7-6, 6-4. The three set win qualified her for state and in the third place match she dropped straights sets to Shawnee 6-1, 6-2.
“I was very proud of Heidi she had to beat the El Reno player to advance to State,” head coach Mary Hudson said. “She had lost to her earlier in the year, so this was a big win. She played really well.”
Howells and Mathena easily defeated her Tulsa East Central opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 and then in their next match took down Harrah 6-1, 6-4. In the finals they lost to McGuinness 6-0, 6-1.
“I am very proud of these two, they have improved all year and have a great chance to place at state,” Hudson said of her duo.
Royal, who played in the No.1 singles division, lost her first match to El Reno 6-2, 6-3, but won her next match against Tulsa East Central 6-2, 6-3. The Lady Jay freshmen then lost her third round to Harrah 6-2, 6-0. In the fifth place match she defeated WesternHeights6-3, 7-5.
Powell and Swartzbaugh lost a heart breaking three set tie-breaker in the first round to Western Heights, a team they had beaten them every time they played them this year. In the next round they won easily over Capitol Hill 6-0, 6-1.
In the qualifying round they played Harrah and lost 7-5, 6-4 and in the fifth place match they soundly beat Western Heights 6-2, 6-1 after not playing well against them in the first round.
“I know these two girls are terribly disappointed, but I was sure proud of the effort they gave yesterday,” Hudson explained.
The girls State Tournament will be played on May 6-7 at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. Times have not been released by the OSSAA.
