Lions Club brings a little Christmas to students at Guthrie Job Corps

Bookmark and Share

The Guthrie Job Corps attracts students from all over the state and a number from surrounding states. In fact about 25 percent of the 460 students presently enrolled come from outside Oklahoma. This is a great testimony to the quality of education and skill training that goes on daily at the Job Corp campus, but it sometimes comes with some extra challenges.

One of those challenges is that during the Christmas break not every student can make it back home for the holidays.

Terri Kennedy, Job Corps Community Liaison, noted, “We have about 50 students who will be on our campus for Christmas. They just cannot get home for Christmas. Naturally, the facility is completely open and all students have meals available, but the spirit of the holiday season is certainly challenging for these students.”

The Guthrie Lions Club became aware of this situation and made a $500 donation for the purchase of gifts for those students remaining on campus.

Lion President John Wood commented, “These students are a part of our community and at least we can provide some gifts under the tree for them. We hope our donation will make their holiday a little more special for them. Members of our club are also working to “adopt” a student or two to invite to their houses for a home cooked meal during the holidays.”

If you are interested in contributing Christmas gifts for these Job Corps students or if you are interested in “adopting” one or two students during this Christmastime please contact Terri Kennedy at (405) 203 8960. You can make a difference in making Christmas a little more special for these 50 students.
